For most of Europe, South African passport holders need a Schengen visa. It covers 29 countries and lets you stay up to 90 days in any 180-day period.

When to apply

Apply no more than six months and no less than 15 days before you travel. In practice, six to eight weeks ahead is the sweet spot, especially before the June–July and December rush.

  • A passport valid for three months after you return, with two blank pages
  • Three months of bank statements
  • Proof of accommodation and return flights
  • Travel insurance covering at least €30,000 in medical costs
Apply through the country where you'll spend the most nights — or, if equal, the one you enter first.

Appointments fill quickly in peak season, so book yours as soon as your dates are confirmed.
